The end scene with Hanks in the hospital completely brought me to tears...that scene alone drained me...this movie is absolutely incredible.

Masterful camera work from Paul Greengrass and excellent acting from Tom hanks makes this one of the best movies I have seen in a few years. It is also the best thriller I have seen all year.

Completely agree that Hanks was excellent, but I will be shocked if Barkhad Abdi isn't at least nominated for best supporting actor. He delivered a phenomenal performance that was the highlight of an already exceptional film. Great actor, so nuanced. To be ruthless yet still have a shred of humanity that the audience can empathize with is impressive enough, but sharing the screen with Hanks for half a movie and still being memorable is a feat in and of itself.

The pacing was perfect, too - perfect blend of drama and adrenaline.

I saw a prescreening of Captain Phillips exactly one month ago. It really is one of Tom Hanks's finer works. I especially loved the final moments. I won't say what they are but they really take your breath away. I actually remember hearing about this piracy situation back in 2009. I was only fifteen at the time but I remember it was the biggest news since 9/11. Greengrass did a fascinating job with this real life story rather than giving it the Hollywood treatment, which he could have easily done but thankfully didn't. This film will definitely earn some Oscar nominations, including Best Actor (Of course), Best Director, and it will most likely win some sound editing and mixing, because it really feels like you are in there with Phillips in that terrifying situation.

*****/5

Good Lord, I hope I'm not alone in my feeling that this is far and away Tom Hank's best work on film. What an extraordinary performance in an extraordinary movie. And Greengrass--this guy just keeps getting better.

This movie actually reminds me of Dog Day Afternoon, but on the high seas, and told from the POV of one of the hostages as opposed to the main antagonist

Well played! Quite a few similarities.
