Bride Wars Review

Bride Wars

(2009; PG)

In theaters:
Friday, 9 January 2009

Summary: Two best friends become rivals when they schedule their respective weddings on the same day.

Genre:
Comedy, Romance

Director:
Gary Winick

Cast:
Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway

Nearly 10 years ago, Kate Hudson was nominated for an Oscar for her breezy, utterly charismatic performance in "Almost Famous."

Anyone want to take a bet on whether she'll be nominated again in the next 10 years? It's like more and more of a long shot with each passing film.

Hudson is at her most annoying in "Bride Wars," a glossy piece of nothing about two best friends who grow up dreaming about their fantasy weddings--only to find out they're both booked at the Plaza on the same day.

Let the mean-spirited practical jokes and hair-pulling begin!

This is the wrong film for the wrong times. Sure, folks like to go to the cinema to escape their troubles. (Think of all the musicals and frothy comedies that were released during the Great Depression.) But in these dark economic times, watching two gorgeous, skinny, screeching young women battle over their insanely lavish weddings--no thanks. This stuff would have seem tired and sexist 40 years ago, let alone in 2009.

You want to see Anne Hathaway in a worthy vehicle? Check out "Rachel Getting Married." You want to see Kate Hudson in a worthy vehicle?

Rent a time machine.
