Viola Davis's performance was so bland and unspectacular, and THE HELP itself was pretty mediocre. Just completely filled with pointless melodrama and character stereotypes. And then you've got Octavia Spencer. Not only was she not worthy of a nomination, she was outright awful. When Tyler Perry or Martin Lawrence don a fatsuit and play that kind of sassy black woman stereotype, it's terrible (and it is, I won't argue), but when Octavia Spencer does it, it's okay and even Oscar-worthy? Gimme a break. The only worthy award the film was nom'd for was Jessica Chastain for Best Supporting Actress, but she really should've been nominated for THE TREE OF LIFE instead, a vastly superior film with vastly superior performances.
