Bianca Corrinesaid on Sunday, November 30, 2014 10:31:54 PMI did not like this movie a single bit. Like many people, I loved the book. You summed up the movie's shortcomings perfectly. It was just lost in translation. You mentioned the moments where The Giver shared visions of the past with Jonas as particularly underwhelming. I agree totally. I wonder how the movie would have turned out in the hands of a different director. Imagine if it was directed by Danny Boyle or Alfonso Cuaron (or even Stanley Kubrick, rest in peace). I think given the source material it could have been great.
Andrew Lopezsaid on Friday, September 26, 2014 12:53:23 PMI saw this movie with my wife. We loved this movie both as a commentary on how our present society is turning cold but also for the human struggles (or lack thereof) of the characters. There were two glaring weaknesses. The voice over narration made the movie feel anticlimatic, diminishing its dramatic effect and from a science fiction standpoint, never explaining how the main characters' crossing of the border could have such a profound impact on society. Take away these two flaws and you have a ***1/2 movie.
